Families play an important role in children’s literacy development. Even without instruction, families can increase children’s reading comprehension by regularly reading aloud, returning to a book, revisiting its content, and asking important questions. To guide families, WIL has created the Read-at-Home program.
This program is based on a bookbag system. WIL offers content suggestions for 32 different bookbags. Teachers can determine exactly how many bookbags they want for their home-school literacy connections; many teachers begin with 16 bookbags and add 16 more the next year.
Specific directions for the bookbags and their use are found on the Teachers' Bookbag Management Page.
